National Workshop on
Recent Trends in Molecular Modeling and Simulation in Structural Biology
14th-18t November, 2011
Organized by : University of Kalyani

The DBT funded Bioinformatics infrastructure Facility (BIF), housed in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics took its inception in the year 2007. From very beginning to till date, this centre is continuously offering a well structured platform for frontline research on bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular modeling & dynamics and simulation. Frontier Research of BIF includes protein–ligand interactions, modeling studies of membrane system, crystallographic data analysis, Cluster and self assembly study.
To popularize the application of Bioinformatics in R&D, this centre has successfully organized seven workshops in different areas like evolutionary biology, structural biology, systems biology, protein-ligand interaction & docking, protein folding, molecular modeling and around 150 participants were trained. This workshop is an attempt to introduce the basics of modeling and simulation studies to the participants from preliminary level.

About the Workshop :

  • Molecular modeling is the science and art of studying molecular structure and function through model building and computation.
  • The key in modeling is to develop and apply models that are appropriate for the questions being examined with them.
  • The computations encompass ab-initio and semi-empirical quantum mechanics, molecular mechanics, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, free energy and solvation methods, structure/activity relationships (SAR), chemical/biochemical information and databases, and many other established procedures.
  • Now-a-days molecular modeling has become a useful and widely used tool due to the increase in computational power combined with improvements in algorithms.
  • Improving the force fields have led to considerable success, especially in protein folding, specificity of ligand/biomolecule interactions and interpretation of complex experimental phenomena (e.g. NMR relaxation, protein-folding kinetics and multiple conformational states) through the generation of structural hypotheses and pathway mechanisms.
  • To introduce such a vast topic among students in the basic level, we are going to organise a national workshop on “Recent Trends in Molecular Modeling & Simulation in Structural Biology” in this year.

Topics to be covered :
  • Theories & Techniques used to study the Bio-molecular Modeling, protein-ligand or protein-protein interaction, dynamics and computer simulation and related data analysis.
Eligibility :
  • Faculty from Universities and Affiliated Colleges, Scientists and Students from Masters/ B. Tech./M. Tech. (final semester or pass-out), Research Scholars (pursuing Ph. D.) are welcome to register for this workshop.
  • As the numbers of participants are limited to 20, selection will be done on the first come, first serve basis.
How To Apply :
  • The duly filled Registration Form along with the Registration fee in the form of demand draft in favour of, "University of Kalyani”, payable at “Kalyani” (with six months validity), should reach the coordinator, BIF Facility at the Address for Communication (Re: Contact us) by 04th November 2011.
